Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that damage the optic nerve, often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye. It is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Early detection and timely treatment are crucial to slowing or preventing vision loss, as the damage caused by glaucoma is permanent. Fortunately, medical science has made significant strides in both understanding and treating this condition.



Traditionally, the first line of treatment for glaucoma involves medications, primarily eye drops that help reduce intraocular pressure. These medications work in various ways: some decrease the production of fluid within the eye, while others improve fluid drainage. Prostaglandin analogs, beta-blockers, alpha agonists, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are commonly prescribed, each with specific mechanisms and side effects. Adherence to the prescribed regimen is critical, as irregular use can lead to worsening of the disease.
